Mr Edward Adams of London

Lichfield City Railway station opened in 1849, on the South Staffordshire Railway’s line from Lichfield Trent Valley to Walsall and Dudley. This later became part of the London and North Western Railway. The architect for the South Staffordshire Railway was Mr Edward Adams of London and the station building built in 1849 was a modest creation in a Tudor style, with tall gables and chimneys.[1]

Edward Adams also designed the buildings for the South Staffordshire Water Works at Sandfields, you can clearly see the influence of the railways in his design.

Unfortunately this original station was demolished in 1882 when the present one was built to accommodate these additional services. The original station stood further east than the present one. It was approached from the city by a path which ran across Levett’s Field and up some brick steps in front of the station, these can still be seen near the present Fire Station.[1]

Are there any other building still in existence that Edward Adams designed?

  1. The Royal Institute of British Architects might be able to help in locating other buildings by Edwards Adams. That’s an interesting drawing of Sandfields which I’ve never seen before, do you have a full transcript of the article from London Illustrated News? – Chris

I have had a reply from the RICA. It is a very detailed response which I will be reproducing here once I have a few other lines of enquiry cleared.

I also have the full copy of the London News article, many thanks to Richard Albanese who pointed this out an ebay item which I was able to bid and win.

      Thanks you for your input.
